Thoothukudi, October 12, 2026: Dr. G. U. Pope College of Engineering, Sawyerpuram, organised a Weather Awareness Programme titled “How Will Super El Niño Impact Thoothukudi District?” on October 12, 2026, to create awareness among students about climate change, extreme weather events and their potential impacts on the district.
R. Hemachander (B.Tech., M.E.), climatology and weather researcher and YouTuber known as Delta Weatherman, participated as the chief speaker. He shared insights into weather patterns, climate-related changes and the importance of understanding meteorological developments and their effects on the environment and society.
The programme aimed to enhance students’ awareness of emerging weather challenges and encourage them to become informed and responsible citizens with a better understanding of environmental protection and climate-related issues.
The event was organised in association with the Lions Club of Sawyerpuram and Sebathaiyapuram and the Namma Bhoomi Foundation. The initiative reflected the college’s commitment to environmental awareness and community engagement.
